I've been asked through the years about how to manage licenses for Software-as-a-Service with Software Asset Management (SAM) in ServiceNow. Things are changing in the Jakarta release, but if you are currently working with SAM, here's a quick 25-minute video that walks through the basics (I recommend opening it full screen or viewing on YouTube directly to be able to see this better):
Quick bullets of what is covered:
- Use the Software Usage [cmdb_sam_sw_usage] table to track usage
- The data to populate this table comes from the online software's management console
- Import the data
- Create the Software Model and Software Counter from the newly created Discovery Model
- Set the License type to something based on the Software Usage table
- Add Software Licenses
- Count licenses to determine compliance
- Use the Last scanned date as a filter on the counter if you pay on some timed basis based on usage
- Publish the Software Model to the catalog to make it available for end users to select
