Success Portal Part 4 of 5 - Product Setups
[Music] hi my name is Sean Walker and I'm a principal product success architect and part of the Ranger team here at service now today I'm going to be talking to you about product setups this video is part four of a five-part video series on the success portal so be sure to watch the other videos to see how all the components of the success portal can work together to help you improve your Sam Pro program okay so today we're going to quickly run through uh what product setups are we're going to talk about the product setup phases and then I'm going to get into a demonstration and actually walk through one of the product setups with you so what are product setups so the product setup section of the success portal is going to give you two guided setups for two different products it's going to give you the Microsoft SQL server and the Windows Server product setup so what it is is they're guided setups that take you through a sequence of tasks that really help you configure those products in your instance so when you use these guided setups and you use the itm health check with uh the Suites that come from Microsoft that's really going to help the Sam manager with these really complex license positions that they're trying to configure so the three different phases um of the product setups the first one is going to be the prerequisite phase and this really talks about what are the prerequisites for getting um these particular products configured in your instance so it's as simple as you know making sure you've got the publisher pack for Microsoft making sure you got the health check because it's got all those Microsoft Suites making sure you're bringing in your data Etc so it's really about setting up your instance so that you can start um doing the compliance position for these products the next phase is the uh software Asset Management configuration phase and here's where you're going to be walking through U making sure you're creating your entitlements doing things like importing or figuring out all your Cal licensing uh looking at doing some install conditions Etc um to really help kind of optimize those configurations for the that particular product and then the last step is where you go through and verify your configurations that you made previously so you can go through and you can run the health check and you can start taking a look at some of the specific um issues that are happening in your data so you can Rectify that and improve your compliance position also talks about things like making sure you got some success goals in the system um running your reconciliation and and then really checking that compliance position report to see if it's it's kind of it's exactly like you expect to see it so what I'm going to do now is I'm going to jump into a Washington instance of service now and walk through one of the product setups with you okay so I'm logged into my Washington instance of service now with software Asset Management installed and I'm on the success portal on the software asset workspace so I'm going to be talking to you about product setups so to get to product setups you simply go over to the product setup page and here's where you'll find the two different product setups SQL server and Windows Server so what I thought I'd do today is walk you through the process of the SQL Server um product setup so you click to get started and it will bring up the pre requisite steps so this is where you can come through and go through each step to make sure your environment is got all the prerequisites in place that it needs to be successful with SQL Server so first one is make sure that we have the software asset sorry the Microsoft Publisher pack installed and you see it's mandatory uh adding that publisher pack definitely does things like add the specific license metrics that you're going to need for SQL Server um I do know that this instance already has the publisher pack uh installed so I'm going to go ahead and Mark this as complete there's not really anything I need to do you can see here it says status is active so it's good to go so I can actually mark this phase already complete and then it goes through making sure hey do you have the itam health check application and because this is mandatory because the guided setup or or the product setup does actually use the health check application for its recommendations so this is installed and active in my environment so I can go ahead and Mark this one as complete and then it takes you through other things like installing the service graph connector um so I'm actually just going to skip this one because I don't actually have the server scrap connector in this instance and I don't have Discovery in this instance with the required plugins but as you can see you need the service graph connector to pick up any installations of SQL Server on your end user compute uh environment now I guess if you don't have SCCM service graph connector you might have something else like in tune or Jam or uh tanium or something like that so you'd want to make sure those particular uh plugins are installed and active and importing installation data on your end user compute environment the discovery plug-in is really where you want to make sure or Discovery tool I should say is really where you want to be doing your SQL Server um installation Discovery for all of your server infrastructure it's really what's going to bring you the best quality data to be able to do that licensed compliance position and do all the reconciliation um this one is just making sure that you've got all your latest patterns installed for Discovery that's really important to make sure it's happening um and then there's also things to talk about setting up the environment field so one of the features or one of the use rights of SQL servers is a lot of times you can actually uh only you should only be paying um licensing costs for servers that are in a production environment your Dev and QA can be licensed through your Visual Studio rights and so you don't actually have to pay for Dev and uh QA type things so setting up the environment variable um for your SQL Server is really handy because then you can on your next section you can you'll see there's something to set up install conditions and you can use these variables as part of your um install conditions so those are some of the prerequisite steps that you can go through and so you're going to want to go through and really understand each one of these prerequisite steps and make sure you have what you need in your environment so from there you go into to the configuration phase and this is where we're talking about going through and verifying your entitlement so if you don't have entitlements now is the time to put them in you know making sure you create entitlements using that PPN right which is really critical um because it really helps with a lot of the use rights and a lot of the downgrade rights Etc so making sure you got your entitlements making sure you've got your cows in place here's what I was talking about you know your install conditions uh maybe setting some install conditions for SQL server and for visual studio there's a section on setting up passive failovers right so that's all detailed in here Etc and then from there you can go into the verify so you in this you've already got all your installations you got your discovered information coming in you got your entitlement information coming in now you want to verify everything how does it look in our environment so this is where it gets you to go over and run the health check um and see what jumps out for SQL server and I'm going to get into the health check in my next video where we're going to dig in a little bit deeper about this particular SQL Server health check and how to run that and how to address some of the issues um so you're going to want to go ahead and do all that kind of stuff and then you're going to want to come down to you know your next steps where you're wanting to run that reconciliation uh and see see kind of what licensed position report actually spits out like how how am I configured you can see in some of these are compliant some of these are not compliant digging into maybe why this isn't compliant Etc so that's pretty much it for the product setups again it's just a stepbystep guide to making sure you you take into account all the different factors that are involved and all the different pieces of data you need to be able to do a SQL server or a Windows Server um compliance position um there will be more uh product setups coming out in the future so make sure you're keeping your your instance up to dat and those new um guided setups or product setups will be released in this video we talked about the uh the product setups and kind of the product guided setups that are available for SQL server and Windows Server we went through quickly the three different phases of those product setups and I did a quick demonstration on how to access the product setups and kind of go through and complete tasks to make sure you have everything you need in your instance so if you want more information on the the product setups uh you can go to the service now product documentation site and search for software Asset Management playbooks and guided setups has a little bit of information in there about those guided setups um please remember this was video four of five of a success success portal series that I'm doing so please make sure you watch the rest of the videos to kind of see how the success portal can all work together to really help you improve your Sam program thanks for your time
