[Music] hi everyone I'm John Lim and this is Enterprise agility podcast we've got Fred Champlain and Mar Casto on today to provide further detail on addressing technical debt especially with application portfolio management Fred take it away for this episode um Mark let's talk a little bit about the life cycle uh from plan build run perspective and and how we use that um to manage our applications our technical debt and how we drive uh to a future State um from that how do how do we get informed and what does APM in particular provide us with yeah and you know one of the foundational I guess Concepts is driving things like csdm it came from the ideas it for it is promoted this plan build deliver run concept so what how does APM play in that it plays in at multiple levels from a planning perspective APM is a conduit for upleveling operations all of the down and dirty stuff that happens that keeps the Enterprise running it up levels that it puts it in the context of your key capabilities in the context of the Enterprise systems that are providing those capabilities so we're upleveling what's happening and that leads to our planning planning might be Cloud lift it might be refreshes it might be brand new systems apm's deeply involved it's when you build a new system you start your conceptual and document your your designs in a EPM as as an EA so there's your plan as you're building there's a little bit maybe not so much but certainly you're monitoring the development and as things evolve as things go to sandbox development uat those statuses are fed back up into APM you start to realize that visibility down into operations operation comes in other things facets like the information architecture that we do in the information portfolio technology standards that are in use those all play into the plan and the build then run happens the system is up APM becomes that Gathering point it ties into Asset Management within the service now platform we're tying in the asset management operations itom U it service Management in instent problem change risk security operations all of these things feed in and a broad up level and unified under the concept of the the Enterprise systems and the capabilities of the Enterprise and that becomes demand if you will it's fed in demand is fed in to the strategic planning machine which in which these demands these needs for things that need to be done are aligned to strategic priorities and okrs and the right thing is chosen to be done that's the circle goes around so again we're back to build and run so plan build deliver run monitor comes back around it's a full circle and Mark that's really the key intersection and and really with strategic portfolio management is making sure that not only are we running uh but we're taking all that Telemetry all that learning uh understanding of of really what our our ultimately our customer Journeys and experiences that we're supporting uh we bring that together and we put it in the context of a business of initia for funding if you're doing you don't do anything or you shouldn't I would think do anything that's not meeting the okrs of your Enterprise you want to align to your strategic priorities or you're wasting your time aren't you exactly exactly how do you know what it is first off you got to figure out what you want to do what are your needs and all of these facets of APM bring that into from operations into to it plus you have other things customer feedback there's there's a thousand sources of demand but that gets align to your strategic priorities and you turn the crank you build it by whatever means we support whatever means at SPM as you know and then you run it and the circle goes around that's right so we're continuously improving by observing uh monitoring um we were talking earlier about technical debt of course we've got that in in multiple Dimensions to to be thinking about in terms of what the factors of technical debt thinking about risk ultimately uh evaluating that in a continuous fashion right the the ongoing run the Business Loop um if you will and and really wanting to ensure that we have um you know reliable operations uh but also the flexibility to adapt so this is where understanding our dependencies being able to have that technical agility to make the minor enhancements the new feature um you know releases that we need to be competitive it's all enabled from an APM perspective is is to pull together uh and this is the the master equation if you will from from Enterprise architecture um uh function in in any Corporation is that we're constantly marrying up business strategy finding the right Technical Solutions the right technology sets uh might be gen AI it could be cloud and and we have to find the right places to use our investments wisely to prioritize against the current objectives and those objectives and initiatives change of course as business conditions change so really APM is about ensuring that we've got that life cycle uh in mind um and that we're proactively managing and we're ready and we're prepared um to to make those changes efficiently
