Principal Class in CI Class Manager
good afternoon everybody and welcome back I hope everybody had a fun safe Fourth of July well today I am studying for my itsm test which I'm taken tomorrow I came across one of the practice test questions and I was getting it wrong because I didn't have an understanding of it which is the principal class so I wanted to talk about it so configuration items whenever you click on the configuration or the uh the reference magnifying glass you see all of these items okay uh these items are not associated with a class that is a principle class so you can go to the CI class manager or if you've already been there CI model okay when you click on hierarchy then pops these up these are all all the the classes now if I wanted to make let's say batch job a principal class well when you do that when you have at least one principal class on your incident change and problem forms whenever you click this now everything is gone okay so what this is telling me is that uh there is nothing I don't have a batch job configuration item so let's go go make one configuration items new F job and we're going to just say software updates okay let's make sure we put test now because batch job is a principal class we should see software updates bingo so I found that to be pretty useful um I did run into a follow on issue is how do you find out which um which items or which classes are principal so when you come to configuration item you go to your filters print class and then it'll pop up here however if you have a class that is marked as principal but you do not have an item Associated to that class you will not have anything populate here and you will not have anything populated um as a reference I ran into that issue when I was just playing around and testing I I marked one of the classes as principal but I hadn't created an item for it well nothing was populating here because there was there was no item but the principal class was selected so you got to be careful of that if you run into that issue um I don't know of a quicker way other than going back and retracing your steps um and seeing which one has it and so I know bass job has it so if I unselect that then everything's going to come back but let's go and see um circuit let's try that one I didn't create an item for it nothing is populating here so when you go to your items and you try to populate your principal class nothing is here so you're going to end up pulling your hair out trying to to figure that one out and if somebody knows a better way then I am all ears because that that could be a hair puller you have to go back and retrace your steps or uh maybe manage your your update sets and and go back but um please let me know if there's a better way to do all this but I hope this video was helpful in some ways um help me help you and help me so thank you for watching and that's it for this one guys
