Creator workflows is on steroids yes I said steroids at this year's knowledge conference knowledge 24 several key updates were unveiled that will at once leave you Spellbound and armed with powerful ways to streamline and simplify the process of creating apps all on the now platform whether you are looking to build custom applications for your company or to extend your ex existing service now workflows you can tap into this possibility with service Nows Creator workflows to meet your organization's unique needs now with that said I could not think of anyone more suitable to have this conversation with than senior advisory consultant Dale Stubblefield also known as Star-Lord the workflow cowboy and you should know a little bit about his popular YouTube channel we'll get to all that later so without further ado welcome Dale Stubblefield to 100 days of service now boom boom boom thank you so much collie it is a pleasure to be here uh it is a little surreal being a big fan of the show finally being on it um and I really appreciate the invitation indeed I am so happy that you're here and as I said in the opening I couldn't think of anyone better to have this conversation with I know that you have been kind of locked in with what's been going on with uh Creator workflows and so it's going to be exciting to hear your take on what's new and to see some demonstrations too right yep I've got a few tricks up my sleeve and I'm not surprised I'm not surprised now Dale I got a question for you so yes colie here we go Forest Gump says that life is like a box of chocolates because you never know what you're going to get in your view what is Creator workflows like well I would say it's like a box of workflows and you do know what you're going to get so creat a workflows is um a workflow on the platform it's been around for I think four or five years now around the same time I started at service now uh and it's an evolution of our way of allowing the customers to either extend our outof the-box products or build completely new products on their own if they want this includes Integrations apps and all kinds of other amazing platform features absolutely you know I love that at and I thought for sure that you were going to talk about Legos that is one of my favorite analogies so um I have a couple of boys and when they were uh younger we bought a lot of Lego sets and they're the worst to step on aren aren't they yes yeah they're they're a little challenging when you step on them but they come in these prepackaged sets yeah and those are great when you want to play a certain scene or it matches a movie tie in uh but there's other times the kids want to get creative and add on to those sets um or build their own play set and mini figs from scratch well that idea of customizing the Lego or building your own Creator workflows is that bucket of Legos to just go hog and build whatever you want it's definitely one of my favorite analogies too yeah for sure for sure now we talk about three areas of creative workf flows that you are most excited about what is the first one that's a great question um I will say it's not just three but it's probably more like 25 but I tried to whittle it down to top three uh for this one and luckily we waited till after the knowledge 24 uh to do is so just a little Safe Harbor if you've been around the block with service now you've seen these everything I'm talking about today um is well two out of three are a real feature one is to be released in the future but just make sure you you check with your account team before you make any purchasing decisions legal legal legal so with that in mind um the first one I wanted to talk about was the allnew creator Studio which I believe we we kind of announced recently about a month ago it was it was on um I believe Chuck and Lauren's uh show uh but at knowledge 24 it was front and center um right when you walked in we had kiosks set up for people to try it out yeah and it's definitely one of my I'd say my top favorite feature um at the moment on the platform that's your top favorite feature wow so I I'm so happy that we have included it as the number one thing that we feature considering that you have like 20 favorites already right so tell us what we're looking at here yeah so this um I brought a a couple of of screenshots with me this is the the homepage of Creator studio um we have a lot of products that end with the word studio and they all have uh their their place in the platform and different types of audiences so the the main kind of audience that would be using Creator studio um is your person that needs to build a quick uh service request type of application something where they request something maybe there's one approval maybe there's a task um what we heard from customers is you know the studio IDE is about eight years old it can be a little overwhelming if you don't build apps app engine Studio while amazing M can still be a little overwhelming for some folks so this was kind of the the basis of Creator Studio we did a lot of research we found the most common thing filling up the it backlogs were these low Roi workflows where you just need a quick form and a and a quick task gets assigned so from this interface it's very easy for someone to just pick that up create the form very quickly yeah create the quick uh workflow and then deploy it to Pride with the the app engine management center ties right into that you know what I appreciate about this Deale is that service now has long said that this is is a low code no code platform and there has been questions over time kind of questioning that right but this shows that you know indeed service now is delivering on that promise of a low code no code environment who are the folks in a particular organization that could use this because when I think no code I'm thinking like hey if I'm somebody you know in a particular business unit then maybe in the finance department for example um the procurement Department I might have a particular process that I would rather not have to go through and pour through emails to to to kind of handle but maybe something like this would be suitable but tell me who this might be suitable for yeah exactly this this is so it is suitable for developers of any skill level including non-developers this is a a zero code environment there's there's no code in in Creator Studio this is all drag and drop functionality the the main target though is somebody in in the the Enterprise or the business that maybe they have had an email-based process they share with a few team members they've always wanted their own service catalog item or record producer within uh their portal and they've been waiting so long for the IT team to to be able to have time to help them this enables them to build that on their own very quickly very easily Jason Kon I hope I'm pronouncing your name correctly is I'm looking forward to getting access to this in my PDI and Kieran jumps in he goes Jason we are actively working on that so folks stand by you know we we did give the Safe Harbor but also also know that folks you know in the product team are actively working on this so that you can get your hands dirty in this stuff that Dale is is talking about here so Dale you talked about the I'm all about that drag and drop life I love how you talked about a simple form simple approval process drag and drop you are speaking my language thank you kie absolutely so talk to me this is our the first uh this is the first new new I'll call this the new new within Creator workflows what is the second so this one is something I have dreamed about for years and that is the new service now studio um I originally got my start on the platform back around the uh Geneva release and service now Studio was very fresh and I had been using it and I built all all these apps for years and years but now it's you know it's kind of it's met the end of its run and it's time to take everything we've learned about these different Studio environments and start rolling them into uh the next generation of developer environment which is going to be service now studio um there is a a really nice uh OnDemand session on the knowledge website anybody can go check that out and see a whole presentation with more information on it but this is going to roll in all the goodness we've learned from App engine Studio from the old Studio from workflow Studio everything that ends in studio is now going to live in one interface and have one home uh to to connect with you know Dale what tell me a little bit more about what we're looking at here people just now joining the stream we see a few boxes here what does this all mean yeah so if you're a service now developer you're probably giddy with joy right now and smiling if you're not a service now developer you might wonder oh what's this this just looks so amazing this is a everyday thing for everyone actually this is uh this is there's a long uh history that kind of led up to this interface so one of the next things we're talk about the next section is my other new favorite feature which has to do with AI but you can see there's creating apps of AI right there front and center there's the idea of jumping back into where you're at we're going to let you make bookmarks of your favorite files if you know what the word Global is or update set those are baked into this now they're not sort of outside of the studio if you don't know what any of those words mean don't worry about it just start with Creator Studio first um and you can actually edit those same Creator Studio apps if you're helping someone in this interface as well you can still get to the app any way that you want to but eventually this is where everything is going to live at absolutely and this is a a fantastic iteration so thank you for um giving us some clarity on that so we talked about three of the of the many new features that you're most excited about with this iteration of creative workflows let's get to the final three that we will cover on today's episode of 100 days of service now what is that third new feature that you're excited about oh my gosh this one is magical so um a lot of times we come out with a feature and it's kind of a 1.0 it's really good and we can't wait to keep adding things to it I would say this one doesn't even feel like a 1.0 our new app generation feels like a 5.0 or a 10.0 on the very first release um this is a real product you can go get it today I came out right at the same time as the knowledge conference and this takes all the power of generative AI it allows you to have a conversation to build your application so as we kind of talk about I've got a little animation here um this is actually from a video on my YouTube channel where I I go through it in depth um so don't worry about reading everything on the screen but you just open up the now assis side panel and it just asks you questions like what's your use case what are the properties of the data you want to track do you want a form for people to submit requests with just simple question so if you're you've never built an app before this is going to guide you through the process and this is just our our first release of building an app with a chatbot and if you can't tell I'm excited about it then I'll try to get a little more excited listen this is really exciting um when I saw your video talking about app generation I was like okay cool service now is delivering on his promise of one loow Cod no no Cod platform and two using generative AI Beyond just a novelty with with the help of of actually it was I just remember this knowledge 23 Bill McDermot CEO and chairman of service now chairman of the board of service now he was talking about the ability to create super applications is in our very near future well he was right so there's this promise has been officially delivered upon and when I saw you go over this in your YouTube video I was like whoa this is amazing right talk to me a little bit about that video how can people get learn more about this yeah absolutely so I do run a YouTube video called Star-Lord the workflow Cowboy um this is a screenshot of that that same video with a QR code to my channel there'll be a link in the description below if you're looking at this later on the the replay Squad uh but this is just such a cool feature when we talked about it at knowledge 23 it was almost like a vision we kind of showed what it could look like and the speed at which service now innovates is just amazing Within than a year we went from we can't tell you we're working on it but we're telling you we're working on it to it's already here so a year from now um I can't wait to tell you the things that it's going to be doing uh but this is going to be a wait hold up hold up time out there's no one listening it's just me and you you mean to tell be neat if you could you could edit things by talking to a bot I'm not saying that would happen but oh the dire that generative AI is going in this is really a shift from I used to write code for hours now instead of writing code I drag and drop things now instead of dragging and dropping I just talk to the AI bot and it builds the app as we keep going down this road this is something I never thought I would see in my lifetime my car almost drives itself and now I build apps by talking to a bot my great grandmother used to reflect upon a time where she never thought of that the the innovation of a television would ever would ever be true right my parents thought they would never see the innovation of computers the way that they are today right and now we're looking at these super applications that are being created faster than the speed of thought and you were already talking about that there are future iterations that are already in the hopper ready to be Unleashed to the service now world and Beyond so this makes me really excited one of the things I would love for you to talk a little bit more about Dale is that you talked about what a Time save this is what is the impact of that on the organization yeah so that's one of my favorite parts that's very easy to measure um the amount of time this saves you to have we'll call it a five minute conversation with with the bot now up front you're going to do the same kind of planning you should always do for your applications out there which is you should be kind of planning out your data model a little making some whiteboarding planning with your friends in the in the conference room but after that initial planning talking to the Bots a five minute exercise now your tables and your forms and everything is already starting to get built out that's going to save you anywhere from five to 10 hours depending on on how fast you're you're clicking and dragging and dropping now it's not just app generation we've got flow generation Playbook generation code Generation all these things there's a lot of different measurements of how much time they'll save you um but let's say an app that might take you 100 hours if you're using these tools could instead take 20 hours now you multiply that over how many times you do it a year and you've saved hundreds of hours which you can then take to go on vacation I mean I mean to focus on more important tasks for the business of course you know selfcare is actually an important task for the business so yes I I I I can I can make those two things connect Dale yeah but what I would say to those out there that are saying oh well maybe one day the Bots will just do everything for us I don't I don't think so this is another stage of automation um that we've had for 100 200 years we've just automated things made them faster better easier I view this like a calculator you know before we had calculators you had to do all that math by hand get out your slide rule people said oh you'll never have a calculator in your pocket we all know how that turned out sure sure sure this is just another another tool in the toolkit for developers so they can focus on the business problem and not where does the semicolon and the bracket go that part because you know listen I I've only been in the service now ecosystem for two minutes and I remember working through my code and I'm like why is this not working and it was a semicolon it was a semic I remember calling Rob up and sending it over to him I'm like Rob I know this thing is right tell me why it's not working Rob Fedor that is if I could tell you how many times I've spent hours looking for the end of the bracket or the semicolon um you know through hundreds of lines of code um now I can just ask um you know an AI how does this code look and it says oh this is what you missed here's how it can be better sure taking that kind of innovation from your consumer Life as we always have and putting it into the now platform for the Enterprise I like how you say that because I appreciate you talking about the impact that this will have on the business tell we talked about three of the many features that you're really excited about in Creator workflows we talked about the first one where you said that with with Creator Studio that is really for you know the the no code person you know or you said developers of any level from no code to being a a full-on developer who is app generation for my gosh that's really for anybody I wouldn't even say you have to even know what a developer is um because right now in its current form you might want to kind of understand what it is you're building uh but as the product continues to evolve we're going to live in a day and age where we just talk to a bot to create edit and do everything um within the platform not saying that's a real thing Safe Harbor but I mean you see where things are going and that's just the Natural Evolution of these kinds of products is to make our lives easier so we can focus on the real problems of getting work done and again not where is the semicolon um I thought drag and drop was amazing when we started doing that and now this toer age like you said your grandparents and parents I didn't think I would see AI in my lifetime and it's it's just already here right absolutely I remember a few generative a AI has been around for a few years now my children have now graduated school but I remember being an early adopter of a tool used to be called Jarvis now called Jasper being an early adopter of that and I remember saying oh my goodness I cannot let my children know that this exists I cannot let them know now with that said my concern around that and not letting them have access to that is that I don't think that schools have kind of elevated it so that they can really accommodate a world where generative AI is available that's another conversation for another podcast but generative AI is definitely something that is here to stay and it becomes a matter of how do we best adapt how do we best use it for uh advancing the business case for taking care of some of these mundane and menial tasks so you know each period we find a new innovation is about how are we going to be able to adapt to it and will we be left behind and we if we resist it too much so these are some of the things that I think about when I just sit back on my blue couch and think about the problems the world is facing I agree 100% um it's going to be uh if it's already has been a shift teachers were trying to look for plagiarism now the AI bot writes the paper for them I mean it's it's yes I can't wait to talk about this one more yeah for sure we'll definitely have to have you back Dale Stubblefield senior advisory consultant at service now starlord the service now Cowboy I want to thank you for joining this episode of 100 days of service now thank you so much collie I
