Here Comes CreatorCon with the Dev Advocates
knowledge 24 is our big service now event each year and it includes our developer event Creator con which is specifically for dev's admins Architects the practitioners of the platform most of which I suspect are listeners of this podcast well to help you navigate Creator con we've got all four developer Advocates to share their combined wisdom to help you get the most out of your conference this year welcome to breakpoint the service now developer podcast hello service now admins Builders developers and of course all of the Curious individuals that I always say with the utmost love and respect welcome to or welcome back to breakpoint the service now developer podcast where we bring you the latest tools tips and tradecraft to accelerate your career my name is CH tamasi senior developer Advocate at service now and I am joined by the one and only the Posh programmer the smart the beautiful senior developer Advocate Lauren McManaman are you today Lauren I am doing fantastic a little apprehensive given how close we are to knowledge itself but I feel like that's everyone's current state of being even attendees so definitely not unique in feeling that way yes nervous but buzzing with energy oh my gosh it's getting close it's getting exciting and by the time people hear this it's going to be right on our doorstep like an Amazon package oh did I do product placement there leave the name out unless they're gonna decide to sponsor us hey cardboard box with a smiley on it how's that that works that works and joining us today as I mentioned we all have our four that's two you me who's left pranav let's do pranav hey everyone my name is pranav haut I think you have seen me or heard me in this podcast multiple times and I'm a senior developer advocate here joined like a one and a half year back it's I I just realized it's already one and a half year for me here and I pass to ear hi everyone uh this is I was about to introduce myself as the this is fine dog with a fire in the background if what are you reading but uh hi everyone I'm Earl du uh I am also a senior developer Advocate on this team I joined service now about three years ago uh and I came in from the higher ed space doing service now development for a few different colleges before joining service now and yes I also the this is fine everything on fire dog and as chaotic as it is right now Lauren managed to pull together a general agenda of what we're going to cover in this episode so where would you like to start Lauren all right well we've actually got a pretty packed schedule for everyone today we're going to be covering a lot but I think the best place to start is what each individual Advocate is contributing to the overall knowledge and Creator con content that way if you're looking for us if you're wanting to participate and any of the sessions that we're doing that could be a good place to start um well I guess I can go ahead and kick things off one of the biggest projects that we've been working on behind the scenes is a series of labs called the Builder track this is something that pronav has dedicated so much of his time to this is something that also Scott Northern on the Creator workflows SC team has dedicated so much time to but essentially what this is is that this lab series is intended to take people that are unfamiliar with development at all and give them the basics for how to build things on the service now platform what is unique to this series of labs is that they have a common use case and technically if you take them in order from mine to pravs to Scotts they are a seamless story so you take a use case called the bot Butler use case it's a you'll go into more details in the context of the lab but you start with a list of requirements as if you were that company's lead developer and scale it up into a full kind of a beta test of what that application should be doing it's very exciting we're very excited to uh to conduct this with the you know I will say it's almost it's very nearly full so I would keep an eye on it in case there is some overflow sessions perhaps but that's what I've been dedicating a tremendous amount of my time to and since I already mentioned him I will kick things off to proud of thanks L I think like I'll add on to build a track it was it was a big thing that we have worked together I personally learned a lot so I'd like to thank you Lauren Scott as well as Chuck and Derek Derek is not here in the show but you folks helped me out build my first lab so I am really excited to deliver it at knowledge can I I want to can I take a pause right there P because I got a real quick question for you uh that might be insightful for those that are thinking about maybe doing a lab next year what did you learn what was your experience can you share any insights to that yeah firstly like when you are building a lab for big n it's like we have been like myel Chuck Lauren ear we have been working on the service now platform for a long time so the things may be like easier for us when we are doing some steps so it feels like oh that's fine we'll know it we know it because we know it right now but for a beginner who just starting their career it's not easy for them to pick those things up so first thing that I learned is to be very detailed about each and every step that's there and you're going to see that during the lab itself second thing I would suggest like this is from the instructor standpoint another thing that I suggest is like when are when you are just starting with the lab if you're doing it for the first time you might have already heard about a lot of bus charms because it's a knowledge you will hear a lot of bus CHS around service now maybe how to do one thing in a different way that's possible in service though there is tons of different ways to do a single task right so I feel like whenever you are doing the lab go through the whole process right whatever it's mentioned don't try to jump onto a different way of doing it you might have heard it firstly complete the whole set of lab whole set of instructions then go and jump into something else you can always trial and interest but follow the flow of the lab so that's my learning from the build track side thank you and what else are you doing I am I'll be hosting a popular game show which is called who wants you a Millar if you're watching from India or if I always say you're watching if you're hearing it from India right so there's a popular show called K banti which is like which is like Who Wants To Be A Millionaire right so you so in this show basically they ask you questions and you can win prizes now the catch with my show is like it will be service now question specific so you'll be you have to answer like certain number of questions to win a jackpot or something I won't reveal lot of details you have to join us on Tuesday at 5:00 p.m. to play the game with me and this is the other thing that I'm doing what about you Chuck what you are doing oh my gosh I got two things and we're going to save one for the end the first and biggest one the big rock in my jar AS it were is the creator con keynote and I am just so so excited about this I was just working on some of the scripts and demos and whatnot with the team and uh it you're going to love what you see so we're Lauren and I are going to be Co seeing again much like last year only better because we learned a lot from last year we're going to be chatting with Pat casy our chief technology officer and EVP of devops some of you may remember him when we did something similar at knowledge 22 in New York and we did some on the digital experiences in the past so Pat great guy very knowledgeable we're going to get a good chat with him then we're going to go to some demos where we're going to be showing a lot of products out of xanadoo and Yokohama woohoo so we're looking forward people we know what you want you want to know what's new what's hot what's coming what to get excited about and I am equally excited as we put this together and then we're going to Pivot to an MVP panel Lauren's going to lead a panel of four people from our community that I'm sure you'll recognize their names we have ay Anderson jesselyn Smith and a very special guest the now number one contributor on the service now Community Anker so it's very very excited to have him here it's his first knowledge so please please make him feel extremely welcome when he uh joins us here in Las Vegas I used to be number one contributor on the community yeah he nuked your spot though what can I say yeah he he he blew right by me like a rocket ship good for him and good for the community and then of course after our panel we'll be doing the devies our app of the Year award where we will announce both The People's Choice Award and the app of the year so very excited for that very excited for everybody who's coming out to that that's where my heads space has been for the last couple of months okay over to Earl um so we're gonna slow down and unwind and welcome to Earl Corner hasn't had his coffee yet for the next two hours I'm going to be walking you through all the things that I'm going to be doing at Creator no oh so I 10 minutes uh I believe it I'm uh attached to 10 different sessions uh at Creator conon so you can find me all over the place but I'll try to be quick through this three of them involve hackathon so if you're interested in in some light-hearted competition some go for Glory stakes and networking and having fun and just building some silly fun stuff uh consider looking at the hackathon last year we packed the entire Pavilion and we a lot of people stayed all the way to the very end it's an 8 Hour competition on the first full day of Creator con and it's just a lot of fun a lot of everyone laughing everyone um joining teams and just having a good time you're going to just search hackathon inside the agenda Builder and you'll see three things the first one is a team formation event so you can come to Creator con not with a team or with just one other person and if you're looking for additional people to join your team or if you're looking for a team yourself jump jump into the team formation event and we'll find you a team then there's a actual hackathon event that takes place on the Tuesday from 4 p.m. to midnight we're going to have food drinks ice cream music not that loud of Music hopefully like last year but um thanks karaoke uh but we're gonna have a great time come join us we have live streams going on and we just we have some fun categories that have good implications of hey you might be a part of Creator Con in the future so check that out and then on Wednesday we have the we'll reveal the winners at the end of the day so those are the three sessions for breakout sessions here's the long list of other things I'm involving I'll run through them quick if you're interested in listening to me wrap for 25 verses straight about JavaScript ecmascript 2021 that's a session uh look for JavaScript ecmascript in the agenda Builder uh if you're a fan of our YouTube stream live coding happy hour live coding happy hour live is going to happen again this year hosted by two of our well oh one of our MVPs and now one MVP turned employee so Sarah Tolson and Adam Chelly is going to be hosting live coding happy hour live and I'll be supporting them uh that will happen on the Expo stage I am also doing a breakout session about loading your instance tables via git directly so letting people use GitHub to create records directly into your instance so if you're interested in that check that out if you are a fan of another one of our shows on the YouTube channel called live oh no what's it called it's not called live you and I Builder live it's called you and I Builder live normally but we're calling it for knowledge live you and I Builder live get it we have kind of a theme going on with live coding happy hour live and then live you and I Builder live so join uh mgw and Brad Tilton and I'll be supporting them as they do it because I am their intern apparently and I like to troll them as much as possible uh one of our marketing uh specialists in our team tanvi uh golay is hosting a session called zero to Infinity uh she created her own app in service now and she is has zero knowledge or background of service now development and she created her entire an entire app for her work and will along with me as her prodev to support her on the times that she actually needed to and we're talking about our experience uh going from nothing uh no knowledge zero no uh pre-existing things to an app that she uses to this day the next thing I'm doing is uh a continuation from last year's session called gen Z developers are the future so uh one of the very earliest things I learned from knowledge conference was uh from the then CEO telling the entire audience that the future are younger people and that still exist that still holds true today and if you're not preparing your company to be good for younger audiences and younger developers uh you're setting yourself up to fail and I talk about that during that session and then there's one last thing I'm a part of but we'll I'll pass it over to uh one of our breakpoint hosts to talk about it because it involves all four of us this is actually a very exciting opportunity we've never done something like this before but it came out of an ask from a lot of people that we had come AC cross on the expo hall floor or in one of our sessions which was oh my gosh I'm so excited I ran into you I maybe missed you X Y or Z you know knowledge of previous years and so we wanted to give everyone the opportunity to come say hi ask questions and maybe get a photo so we actually pre-planned a developer Advocate like meet and greet what's the official name a photo op I think photo photo photo it's basically uh yeah it's basically a meet and greet of the B for Advocates that is happening Tuesday morning at 10:30 so almost right after that initial big keynote with Bill so hey as you're coming out of the Expo or coming out of the keynote area onto the expo hall floor come find us come say hi we would love to meet you and we're very very excited to see how that all goes we're so vain we probably think this photo op is about us yeah it's actually an idea that I I stole from other conferences and whatnot um I was recently on a cruise with some celebrities and they had such opportunities only this one you don't have to pay for you just get in line also it's not with celebrities it's not they think we're celebrities Lauren they might be Mis misunderstanding the scenario um but that's all the things that we are looking for Earl actually did the hard work of kind of creating an entire list of every single session that we're involved with and the short link for that is devlink dosn K24 D Dev D Advocates oh awesome we'll have make sure to have it in the description for ease as well absolutely it's correct I just checked K24 dd- Advocates perfect well the next session that we were going to kind of dive into as well is a little bit of a summary of last year so last year we conducted kind of the dos and dotes for knowledge so I just wanted to ask each Advocate if they had a specific do and don't that ranked as like their big number ones just as a quick summary maybe for those that missed the episode last year let's start the other direction let's start with Earl for his du and don't at the very top of my list is the importance of comfortable Footwear yeah that's always what I seem to overlook can I yes end that with socks too I discovered in Washington that uh comfortable shoes are great but if you don't have comfortable socks your feet are still going to be miserable and if you ask others they'll talk about uh bringing multiple pairs of shoes shoes for different occasions but all of them need to be comfortable I've even brought certain ones just for walking and so for the ladies out there that like to wear heels for certain things especially if they're like presenting um I even pack specific shoes just for walking and then I switched into my heels when I'm presenting so if you have enough space in your backpack you can always try that method out too and did you have a specific don't for people to avoid come back to me totally fair well here I'll slip in my don't I haven't said my do yet but I will slip in my don't my don't comes from you some observations from last year knowledge is a really fun event and it's in a really fun city of Las Vegas it has a nickname the Sin City if you will make sure that if you're participating in fun adult activities maybe you take off your name badge you know just a little tip if you're you know having fun in Las Vegas don't NE necessarily be walking around with your full legal name and your company you represent for the world to see you know just a little don't be mindful of because I saw quite a bit of it last year good tip it's my turn H my due is do make time to talk to people this is a huge networking event take advantage of that I have seen careers be transformed at these events just because of the introductions you made present company included it can be extremely valuable so do take time bring some business cards if you have them or a digital business card or stickers with your QR code something so people will remember you and stay in contact that is my do my don't don't party too hard kind of piggybacking off of what Lauren said if you are out and about take off that name badge but make sure you're sane for the next day I've seen a lot of people not show up especially if they have an assigned task that that's the worst casee scenario hey your session's at 10:30 and they're still recovering from a nasty hangover at 300 p.m. so it's don't don't overexert yourself treat yourself kindly it is a marathon of three or more days some people are going to pre-con training so take it easy on yourself get some rest don't overdo it y coming to me I think like one suggestion I can give because I am traveling from India to us for knowledge so if you are traveling internationally make sure that you come a day or two earlier to the conference don't come on a Monday night because you will be jet laed then you'll miss your whole three days of conference and coming back to like another thing that I think piggy bank on what shuck said don't overdo with the agenda Builder like you have the agenda Builder some people feel like we have to attend all the session if there are 20 J sessions happening I'm going to attend all of them don't do that like make sure you have gaps in your agenda like for SP breaks or as Chuck mentioned to do networking because knowledge like you can always get Knowledge from various places but if you are here at knowledge you should try to network with a lot of people and my don't it's about like from my personal experience don't walk on the STP the whole night because you're will be tired like hell the next year last year I I walked for 25,000 steps a day on an average for three days so don't do that so that's my don't and lastly like try to sleep on time if you have trouble in sleeping make sure you uh try to to do whatever it's needed to so that you can sleep well those three days because if you are coming internationally uh there is a chance that you won't be able to sleep properly because it's a new place and everything for you so try to make sure you make all the plans how you can get proper sleep yeah these are my don'ts and dos for knowledge perfect and since I already covered my don't which was if you're going to be naughty do it anonymously um my due is uh make sure to prepare for the climate I think this is something that I over look every single year that we are traveling to a very Aid Desert even if you are inside the entire time in fact I will argue that because we are inside the entire time most likely it will be even harsher on yourself so pack ey Drops make sure you're drinking a lot of water uh if you're like me bring a bunch of um like Vaseline and things like that otherwise for like I get nose beds a ton I think I get nose bed at least once a year when I'm in Las Vegas so prepare for the climate it is pretty ruthless especially with the added factor of like very harsh Hotel air conditioning system so uh prepare for for that Old Las Vegas climate and Earl to polish this list off what is your big do not do I uh I thought of one I had of a good one it's kind of a both combined don't and do but if you went to the agenda Builder and saw that your favorite sessions were all filled up and all of them were closed off my do not is do not despair because what you can do is still arrive early to each of your intended sessions and what we do at knowledge is that if the session is full they are reserved seats they aren't uh assigned seats basically so if a person doesn't show up for the reserved seat sometime before the session starts I think it's 10 minutes or five minutes or something five minutes before the session starts they will start letting people in that are waiting at the door so don't despair just get in line you'll be okay that's fantastic advice because also people flake all the time so that's sincerely if there's some session that because that was one thing that we've been seeing a lot on social media is like oh you know on the first day every quote unquote everything's full well I highly encourage you to follow Earl's advice on that one if there's something that you're desperately wanting to go to I am pretty sure someone will especially if it's later in the week someone will flake and you can probably get a spot oh it's a nice tie into what panov said as well when when you look at your agenda Builder yes there's going to be a lot of things you want to do I would tend to prioritize them what I really really really got to get to yes you know it's it's going to be something I have to report back to my boss those are your priority ones then there's the priority twos where you go I'm going to get there if I can and then the priority threes are uh I may poke my head in and see if there's room or something of that nature so that way if you do get caught in an interesting conversation you go ah it's a P2 or a P3 I can let it go someone else is going to get in there who really really really wants it as their P1 absolutely thing knowledge as a Disneyland trip go do everything so make your agenda in advance what rides you want to go we didn't ask permission to use their name either yeah are you doing any uh post knowledge trips like you did last year speaking of Disneyland yeah I'm doing another trip to Disneyland this time but this time to The Adventure Park so I reach out to you all I hav I'm debating whether to leave that part it or not I'm the I am the team uh if you're trying to make a good Disney trip Disneyland trip let me know and I will help plan So speaking of planning one thing that we thought would be really fun as all former attendees of like we at one point or another we were all service now customers and that is the biggest consequence of now working for service now is that we don't get to go to all the fun sessions anymore so I thought it'd be kind of fun to like do a little bit of role playing and if we were still attendees uh name a session or two that would be at the top of your list to attend I think that that could be a fun little round robin as well and also amplify some of the sessions that are really kind of standout gold stars on on the curriculum list I wanted to pick something that I hadn't experienced before something I really want to learn about you there's there's the favorites like oh I love Integrations and I want to go hear what so and so saying about that but I wanted to take it in a different direction and and go what would I attend if I could learn something new this is where I want to get handson or U so I put down my first one is the session J AI demystified your grandma's guide to understanding the tech Wizardry so points to that one just on the title yeah no kidding that one's actually got three sessions three sessions uh by Miguel and Thomas I'm not going to try and pronounce last names here because I just embarrass myself but there is one on Tuesday Wednesday and Thursday so looking forward to seeing that I think I'll go next this is one thing like because last year was my first knowledge and I was like as I was not able to attend haakon which is something like I always wanted to but after seeing all the entries last year I feel like it's good that I didn't attended or participated in it because there is there was no way I could have won that so if uh you are someone of a developer admin or any type of role Ive seen last time like there were a lot of people who are business analysts they also participated in hackathon so you should definitely try that that's one thing second thing I would like I just talk about a session because I am not that much familiar with UI Builder right so there is a session that's happening on like how to build a killer app using UI Builder that was on my list as well that was on my list that's about see you there yeah shout out to Brad Tilton and Chris Johnson that's like fantastic it's a great summary so sorry I didn't mean to cut in go ahead BR no I was just saying yeah that's something the title is so catchy like how you can build your app and I was like always every time we do Tech now I always say I haven't got time to do UI Builder so I thought I should attend but I don't think I will be able to uh last thing like that was a bit tricky to think about like three things right so one so like as an admin like everyone who is doing who has done Administration in the past you have encountered cloning like cloning is something that's used a lot as an admin so there is a session that's happening on like cloning like a guide to cloning I think that's what it's called and so if you are an admin you should definitely consider that session because we have a new cloning UI in Washington DC so you will get an idea how to do all these cloning stuff and that's super helpful so these were my top list from all the session passing it to ear yeah uh I have I do have a theme on mine I that I cuz I had so many I I chose for this recording but when we said it like let's pick three the three I did pick does have a theme and it's basically nerdy stuff and so um the one the three I want to shout out is uh one session by ay Anderson that's Anderson with an E uh instead of an O welcoming Wizards the magical Pig warts onboarding experience o uh a yeah it took me a sec uh a themed an entire session around revamping their onboarding process for students but uh re themed it all to the Magic Magical Wiz Wizarding World the next one I want to uh shout out to is or I would attend is a session by Kevin Clark or migna if you know in our in the uh SN devs Community from subow from subflows to superheroes recreating marvel snap the video game inside service now and uh Kevin has been working on this app for so long uh recreating uh an a mobile phone app game uh inside service now but has also we created a lot of our more famous or inFAMOUS service now personalities as characters inside the game instead of using uh Marvel ones so all four of us in this um podcast are represented in there with yeah with generated artwork and everything oh you didn't know I you didn't see that okay I want to add that to my list yeah I'll send you all the pictures that he uh created for this app but Kevin has been painstakingly working on this to teach himself and to challenge himself and making an entire game inside of service now so shout out to Kevin uh look for you can search Marvel inside the catalog and you'll see it pop up and the last nerdy one that I would attend is uh you're just not my type data type tra in JavaScript by Adam Chelly uh one of our colleagues here at service now but last year he also did the JavaScript truthy uh session which is very great JavaScript knowledge and this one is I'm sure is going to be a good followup to that deepening well of JavaScript uh know know it and know it all kind of knowledge that you might want to have in your back pocket those mine fantastic and I'll polish off the list so I themed mine kind of around areas of growth that I I still feel like I need to make with regards to service now development so it's like truly like if I was still working at a customer these were some of the things I would be picking to kind of catch up on areas of like oh like I just I don't know much about it like for example the first one is the a toz of accessibility uh taught by Jin Smith who is also one of the keynote MVP panelists as well as Michael Rapa uh it's all about uh UI design around the concepts of accessibility for screen readers and you know picking pick aspects that as someone that uh I think it's easy to overlook making your applications accessible to outlier conditions right and doing so in a way that makes apps approachable to everybody I think it's very important there's not enough content about it so I was really really excited to see this type of session being taught at knowledge it would definitely be one I would prioritize also just because similar to PR of uib and designing UI in general is something I would love to improve on that was on my list too oh that's the second one comes from the fact that when I was a service now developer for a large part of that time I was the only one right I think at one point it was my boss and me he left and then we had an intern for a while but it was a very small development team and so I never had to grow the development team as much while I was there and I think that that would definitely be a shortcoming if I had transferred into a developer job at a larger company right um so there is a class on it's from the wild west to wow taming the chaos of custom app development with app engine management center this is being taught by Chris hos and Brooks Hawkins two people that we've had on our channel on our podcast a lot they are fantastic speakers and I think they teach uh this specific course on not only managing your applications but doing so in a way that would be appropriate for a team right a team of developers that's obviously the ideal we'd like to see a lot of companies move towards um so learning not only how to do that for your apps but for a team I think is very necessary and then my fast or my last one uh doesn't play into that at all that theme at all I picked one solely off the person presenting it which is the NHL I am a huge ice hockey fan and the NHL as well as NASCAR are presenting knowledge this year so they I believe the NHL has two sessions but the one that caught my eye was similarly start small scale fast um this is being presented by John France cacus and John Stein from service now the first gentleman being one of the svps from the NHL um they have deployed a tremendous amount of applications itsm FSM uh CSM uh the whole nine yards essentially in a very short period of time so learning how they did that also from the perspective of one of my favorite organizations out there would be something that would definitely be on my my agenda I want to add one more just in case I can go and that would be Earl's rap session to JavaScript oh yeah ecmascript search for ecmascript 2021 in the catalog if you haven't already Wednesday May 8th 3:45 p.m. add it to your agenda that's that everybody hold up your phone and record it that it's going to be that good do you have a specific outfit you're wearing for this because that I mean you are you are performing we all saw a little bit of a teaser of it internally so I haven't thought about an outfit to be honest I'm I have no time to think about an outfit I am only focused on the fact that I I have signed up to do an 11 minute long rap about JavaScript man so that's all I'm focusing on right now and practicing that's right up there with rapper Delight buddy good luck yeah this is our Hamilton this is our Hamilton do I wonder if people are G listening to the earlier part of this episode and when I said I was going to do a 25 verse rap on JavaScript do I wonder if people were like haha that's funny no I am actually doing a 25 ver rap very Earnest yeah this is a very Earnest statement oh thank you team that was a lot of fun looking forward to seeing you all in a very short time just days after this is released woohoo it's going to be a a quick and exciting time so get some rest now while you can and thank you wonderful listener
