World of Work - The Rise of Hybrid
[Music] hello everyone and welcome back to the Enterprise agility podcast I'm your host John Lim and today we'll be live with Jim Tish and Annie Jordan to discuss an increasingly relevant topic hybrid work what does it mean where is it going and who's talking about it let's pass it over to Andy now to jump right in so hybrid everybody's talking about hybrid right now everybody is is saying how important it is no one's really talking about what the heck it is and and why it's important and all this so we're going to talk a little bit about that but first of all let's understand a little bit of context this it's all about becoming more effective and more efficient organizations are pursuing this transformation journey to become more successful today and to Future proof themselves to be uh um successful in the the future as Ai and the rest of the technological advances change what we have to do so we're always looking to to understand what it is the customers want and from a service now perspective they're hearing a lot about hybrid so they decide well let's understand how people work let's do some studies and and Jim sort of made me do a lot of work around um some surveys and data analysis and Jim tell us why you made me do all this work and made me sit in spreadsheets for hours on end first Andy it's great to join you on this podcast and yes I do like to make you work so um yeah so we uh we did this survey and we've done this is our second year doing this survey um we title it the world of work and we really want to understand how work is getting done and we looked at the survey worldwide we looked at different Industries geographies and organizations because we want to understand exactly how they deliver work meaning do they do it in a traditional way do they do it in an agile way did they do it in a hybrid way so this is really insightful for us to understand how our customers are actually delivering work and then we also wanted to get the insights so that we at service now as we um uh look at our own products it's like how can we uh innovate and evolve our products to support how people are doing the work and so it's super exciting and we know that work is changing the world is changing um there's a lot of change that's going on and so people are changing how they deliver work Andy and so we're super excited to do this survey again and and get this study so let's talk a little bit then about this idea of hybrid because every time you talk to someone about hybrid they all know what you're talking about but they have completely different understandings from one another and we found that out actually when we did the survey and different people sort of had different definitions and some people had multiple definitions of what hybrid was so when we talk about hybrid we're talking specifically about an approach to delivering work in particular discretionally work that combines elements of traditional Plan D driven project delivery with elements of agile so instead of using one of the two major methodologies a project manager or an equivalent role will look at the needs of the particular piece of work that they and their team are delivering and say okay what are the best elements of each of these approaches that we can bring together in order to deliver a hybrid model that gives the project the best chance of success we know these other meanings of hybrid one of the most common other ones is the idea of a hybrid work approach where we have people working in the office people working remotely and some people working in a hybrid manner that combines elements of uh remote and in office work whether that's at an individual Level A Team level an organizational level whatever it is that is a perfectly legitimate use of hybrid as well but when we at service now here talk about hybrid we're talking specifically about this little bit of agile a little bit of traditional in order to come up with the best approach and Jim I know you mentioned this a little bit um but this was pretty wide ranging survey right there was a lot of people and a lot of different regions around the globe represented in this last survey yeah first of all I'm glad that you basically provided that differentiation on hybrid because a lot of people as you just mentioned when you think of hybrid they're like oh that's room working working remotely and then also at the office and we got that a lot and then we actually as you defined hybrid is really what we were looking for um which is that combination of you know elements of agile and traditional and so forth so when we went out there we actually talked over thousand different organizations and people and again as I mentioned different different Industries and different company sizes and it was really really insightful and one of the things we learned Andy was like how high performance organizations work with you know uh provide delivery if you will versus low performing organizations and uh you know you mentioned that you started this that you know hybrid's on the rise so maybe you could talk about for just a minute like why High performing organizations kind of tend to lean more into this hybrid model yeah so we when we did this survey we sort of said okay we can identify what the trends are across organizations but let's also look at Trends within the overall survey and we said okay let's look at organizations that are doing a particularly good job at delivering on their business goals and objectives that they're succeeding in their key Strate IC initiatives and then let's look at the ones where organizations maybe are a little bit struggling and let's understand a little bit more the differences between those two what is it that characterizes an organization that does well as opposed to what are the behaviors and characteristics of an organization that's struggling a little bit more because that way we can actually start helping organizations to get better and I know you're going to talk a little bit about a webinar we have coming up and there'll be access to the full report so I'm not going to go into all of the details of of what we found it's just a little bit teaser point there but we did find a number of differences in how not only organizations use hybrid but also how they perceive hybrid relative to Agile and waterfall approaches and I think that's something that's key and it wasn't the only difference we also saw uh differences in the type of capabilities that are valued and prioritized in high performing and low performing organizations but there was a clear I don't think I'm giving too much away just say there's a clear Focus amongst those High performers to actually leverage hybrid more and actually look at how they can improve performance there and this is something that isn't just coming from our survey here PMI recently released their their latest pulse of the profession report uh and that identifies in their survey that hybrid is now overtaking agile in terms of of delivery percentages it's now the second most popular approach in their survey so this is a trend that is is working and it wouldn't be working it wouldn't be continuing it wouldn't be seen as such a successful approach if it weren't for the fact that it was delivering results you know Andy super excited about this webinar that's coming up and so um thanks for not giving it all away right now we're gonna talk more about it in the webinar and uh the webinar is actually on March 26 it's at 800 am here Pacific or 11: am at the eastern time in the US and um we're going to take a deep dive into what Andy talked about we're going to talk about hybrid project delivery model we're going to take a deeper look into these high performing organizations and um come with those characteristics and those different capabilities that they have we're going to talk about achieving business outcomes um and some of the detailed results we got from the survey on those high- performing organizations and then we're also going to be joined by um uh Jeff from Alcon and so Alcon is going to be talking about their pmo journey and how they use hybrid project delivery to deliver some great results and so we're looking forward to hearing from Andy on that day we'll hear from Jeff and myself and others um we're also going to look at uh at our ux research when it comes to different type of hybrid um changes that are happening such as hybrid Resource Management which that gets pretty interesting and so Jennifer is going to join us on that so super excited about this webinar coming up and I hope that you all join us um the description and link is uh is in this podcast description and so uh looking forward to it thanks Jim and thanks everyone for joining us and and please come back soon because the next uh next episode of this podcast we're going to dive into hybrid a little bit more and explore what might be coming up next so you don't want to miss that so thanks for joining us thanks Jim we appreciate it with your Cod and we'll talk again soon thanks [Music] Andy
