How Keith Mills has reached the pinnacle of ServiceNow achievement

Import · Mar 14, 2024 · article

When you RiseUp with ServiceNow, you’re investing a bright future and building a better life for your family. Today, let’s meet a shining example of someone who has done both.

Meet Keith Mills. He’s an Associate Director and ServiceNow Certified Master Architect (CMA) at Accenture in Alberta, Canada. For the last 15 years, Keith has been building a rewarding and successful career in the ServiceNow ecosystem— a career that still gives him time to spend with his family.

Keith started out with a degree in Environmental Sciences, planning to work in oilfield reclamation in the Alberta oil patch. However, he quickly discovered that this wasn’t his passion, so he enrolled in a program for network technicians with the goal of changing his career direction. He was so successful in the program that the college where he took the course offered him a job— where he spent the next year. At the end of that first year, he went to work at another college - where his now wife was working - for the next 5 years.

Wanting to take the next step in his career, Keith then joined a consulting company in Alberta focused on help desk software. Keith enjoyed consulting, but he ended up spending a lot of time away from his family working at customer locations because the helpdesk software the company was using needed to be deployed on customer premises.

Then, Keith’s life changed when the company he was working at discovered ServiceNow. It seemed like a perfect fit for the company’s customers, so the company became a ServiceNow partner. As Keith explains, “ServiceNow launched the company into the big times. Previously, we worked with mid-market companies, and now our focus became working with large ones. That opened so many opportunities for me.” In fact, the company became so successful that it was acquired by Accenture in 2017.

Keith jumped in with both feet, taking the ServiceNow System Administration course at ServiceNow headquarters. Since then, he’s gone on to become a Certified Application Developer (CAD) and a Certified Implementation Specialist (CIS) in no less than eight different ServiceNow product areas. Then there’s the accomplishment that Keith is most proud of — becoming one of the first ServiceNow CMAs as part of the CMA program launch in 2019. He’s also a dedicated supporter of the ServiceNow community, saying that while it’s huge, it’s also very personal—everyone is willing to help each other, and he’s built great relationships with other community members.

Since he started working with ServiceNow, Keith says his career has been on an upward trajectory. Over the last 15 years, he’s been able to work with some of the largest companies in his region — including major oil companies — and has done everything from greenfield deployments to complete service desk replacements. He’s also deeply involved in helping other Accenture employees to RiseUp with ServiceNow, co-leading ServiceNow Certified Technical Architect (CTA) cohorts at Accenture and helping CMA candidates prepare for their exams. Keith explains that giving back like this is hugely rewarding—in fact, it’s one of his passions.

And what about the long hours Keith used to spend on site? Because ServiceNow runs in the cloud, he’s able to travel far less and spend more time helping customers succeed. And it’s had a huge positive impact on his personal life. Because he can be at home, he’s been able to watch his children grow, get involved in what they do, and spend quality time with his wife. His oldest daughter is graduating from high school this year and has already been accepted at a post-secondary institution. Keith says it’s an exciting time for him, and he’s glad he can be at home to experience it.

When you Rise Up with ServiceNow, you unlock huge opportunities to grow your career and better your life. Like Keith, isn’t it time for you to seize the future and give your family the life they deserve?
