How Deborah Hill rediscovered her passion for technology

Just ask Deborah Hill, an ITSM Developer with a multi-national corporation in the UK. She’s rediscovered her passion for technology with ServiceNow after becoming disillusioned with the IT industry.
Deborah says she has always been interested in computers, which is why she did her degree in computer science. She went into a junior development role straight out of university, focusing initially on requirements gathering and development. She then evolved her role into IT business process analysis, working with customers to define their ITSM solutions. However, she became increasingly fed up because it was incredibly hard to design optimal processes for customers who had, as she puts it, “different applications and services everywhere.”
Deborah then took a career break, in large part because she was starting a new family, but also because she was becoming tired of the industry. Finally, she decided to return to work after six years, but she couldn’t find anything that interested her. Then, a friend suggested she look at ServiceNow, and she says she was hooked. She explains that ServiceNow played into everything she was passionate about, solving many of the hurdles she’d encountered in her career to date.
Deborah dived right in and started to learn everything she could about ServiceNow. The first stop was YouTube, where she eagerly watched anything and everything that interested her. She also spun up her own personal developer instance (PDI) and started to experiment, even developing her own scoped app in the PDI. She says that the ServiceNow community was incredibly helpful, giving her answers to nearly all of her questions. Once she had a good idea of what she wanted to get into, she took courses on Now Learning to grow her knowledge and expertise. According to Deborah, there was so much available on Now Learning that she was spoiled for choice, but that choosing the right learning path pointed her at the exact courses she needed.
Now, Deborah is a Certified System Administrator (CSA), and she’s nearly completed her Certified Application Developer (CAD) qualification. She’s enjoying every minute of her role as an ITSM Developer working with the ServiceNow platform, explaining that she was fully prepared to leave the IT industry, and ServiceNow is the reason she stayed.
Deborah says that ServiceNow offers an almost limitless learning journey, and that she will never stop being a magpie for all the shiny new innovations ServiceNow is constantly introducing. She’s particularly excited about new ServiceNow areas such as robotic process automation (RPA) and AI. And her biggest joy is having a huge positive impact for customers by using ServiceNow to turn complex, opaque processes into transparent, predictable workflows.
