Merv Small went from novice to founding his own ServiceNow practice
Meet Merv Small. He’s the founder, co-owner, and Managing Director of Agiro, a ServiceNow Premier Partner in Australia. He’s also a shining example of what can happen when talented people RiseUp with ServiceNow.
Merv’s parents moved from South Africa to Australia when Merv was three, looking to escape apartheid and build a better life. Merv grew up with a passion for music—he founded his own R&B group at the age of 13 and toured Australia as a professional hip-hop artist—but he also invested in his education, graduating from Western Sydney University (WSU) with a degree in Business Management.
In 2012, Merv was working as a change coordinator at Foxtel, a media streaming company. That’s when Foxtel implemented ServiceNow—an event that Merv says ultimately changed his life. Despite having no tech background, Merv stepped up to be the platform administrator, putting himself on a crash course to learn about ServiceNow. Six months later, Merv qualified as a Certified System Administrator (CSA).
In less than two years, Merv grew his career to become Foxtel’s ServiceNow Solution Lead, running a team with enterprise-wide responsibility for the platform. Using this experience as a springboard, Merv then joined ValueFlow, an Elite ServiceNow partner, ultimately becoming a Customer Success Manager. He continued his career momentum as a Director at Deloitte Australia, leading the company’s ServiceNow practice for New South Wales, Queensland, and the Australian Capital Territory.
Even though becoming a ServiceNow practice lead at one of the world’s largest consultancies was a huge accomplishment, Merv knew he could do more. He decided to start his own ServiceNow practice, founding Agiro. Merv says that one of his big drivers was to give other people the opportunity to change their lives the way he had. He explains that starting the team and seeing them grow their skills has been a deeply rewarding experience, and he’s also incredibly motivated by the amazing customer feedback.
Throughout his ServiceNow journey, Merv has maintained his commitment to ServiceNow education. As well as becoming a Certified Implementation Specialist (CIS) for both ITSM and HR, Merv’s also a certified ServiceNow trainer himself. He’s using those training skills to give back to his community, including delivering the first university ServiceNow course in his region at WSU. Merv describes giving the course as a 360° moment—starting out working his way through WSU as a single parent, only to have the privilege of returning as a lecturer and empowering the next generation.
When you RiseUp with ServiceNow, you open up a future with virtually unlimited potential. That’s exactly what Merv has done—using his drive and talent to take control of his career and go places he says he’d never imagined. Isn’t it time for you to RiseUp with ServiceNow as well?
