Citizen Development-Define a Clear Value Proposition

Import · May 04, 2023 · article

Successful programs and organizations set out clear guiding visions to guide and direct the program to align with that future-centric vision. They are aspirational and are meant to be worked towards achieving. They also can leverage missions, goals, and KPI's to set the current actionable expectations. Successful Citizen Development programs are no different than other programs in this respect and thus have a clear purpose for why they exist.

When deciding to pursue a Citizen Development program, it is important to craft a vision for the program that aligns with and is connected with achieving business outcomes. The vision should set the long-term direction for the program. An example vision from the Now on Now team: "10% of our employees build 80% of our automated processes."

In addition to your vision, the program should establish Goals and measurable KPI's that can help connect the program with the business outcomes. When crafting the program KPI's it is important to avoid crafting things like # of apps, # of citizen developers, and similar interesting tracking statistics. Focus on KPI's centered around showing the business value like: # of workflows automated, # of business hours saved. The KPI's and Goals for the program should adjust over time as the program matures, but continue to be centered on the value being delivered.
