Out of the box, there are several options for keeping an eye on the progress of a record. It could be done through SLAs or through metric definitions. There is also an option to use Inactivity Monitor to notify when a particular record did not get updated by an user for a while. It generally triggers an event like incident.inactivity which can be used further to write emails or a script action.

In the GlideWorld though, records are suddenly woken up from their good old afternoon nap by inactivity monitors.
