Back in 2005 I took a job as a patient escort for a hospital. I really wanted to work on computers. In my mind working on computers would mean not having to deal with people. One patient I was pushing from imaging to his room and I were making small talk. He mentioned he worked in IT for a living somewhere. He said "It doesn't matter what you know, it's all about who you know." I wish I got his name back then. Later I got a job in Patient Registration paying $2 more an hour. I still wanted to work on computers all day. Patient Registration let me work on a computer to enter patient details. I thought if I moved to IT I'd get to deal with code only. I got a job IT 6 months later on the Help Desk. After a few months I realized that IT requires so much customer service skills. I was struggling with some of these interactions. On Jan 28 2011 I bought "Customer Service for Dummies" and it changed how I did somethings. Between Lynnisha, and that book I had all the soft skills I thought I'd ever get. Every job after that those customer service skills still aid me. Had I known IT and all these technical roles I've filled since needed them, I'm not sure I would have gone all in on IT. I sure am glad I did in retrospect.
