I need to apologize because I meant to send this content through my mailing list first. Since I sent my "Know Your Worth" email, and the subsequent two part video series (1, 2) I've been getting a ton of messages. Not about the salary survey, or the "ghost write for exposure", but something far more frightening: over-reaching employment contracts. I'm not exaggerating when I say frightening. I want you to imagine being pushed out of a company, or *desperately* needing to leave, but a contract is waved in your face saying you can't work ANYWHERE for ANYONE in the entire industry for TWO YEARS. I want you to imagine taking every other job you could to sustain your family, and doing that for 2 years. I want you to imagine lawyers pouncing on you any time you even talk to someone about work. I want you to imagine you or your peers counting the weeks before homelessness. THAT's where we're at, friends.
Those are just some of the stories people are telling me. The Duke will not let this stand. So I brought in a lawyer to talk contract law, negotiation, and self-advocacy. You won't believe what other industries count as normal.
In a few weeks time, the featured lawyer, Kevin Comer and I will be holding a Legal Q&A. Format and exact date are TBD, but all updates will be coming though this mailing list. You can start sending me your questions by replying to this email and we'll get you an answer even if you can't attend.
