Merv Small went from admin to tech founder without a tech background

One Opportunity. A life-changing leap into the ServiceNow ecosystem

In 2012, Merv was working as a change coordinator at an Australian media streaming company. That’s when he had a life-changing moment. The media streaming company decided to implement ServiceNow, and Merv stepped up to being the platform administrator, despite having no technical background. He qualified as a ServiceNow Certified System Administrator (CSA) in just six months, and he’s never looked back.

From Platform Admin to Consulting Director in just a few years

Within two years, Merv was the ServiceNow Solution Lead for the media streaming company, running a team with enterprise-wide responsibility for the platform. Using the experience as a springboard, he joined an Elite ServiceNow partner as a Customer Success Manager. Keeping up the momentum, he then became a director at one of the world’s largest consulting companies, heading up the ServiceNow practice in New South Wales, Queensland, and the Australian Capital Territory.

Founding Agiro to help others build their own success stories

But Merv knew he could do even more. That’s when he founded Agiro. He says that one of his biggest drivers was to give other people the opportunity to build a rewarding career like he has. He explains that starting the team and seeing them grow their skills as being a deeply rewarding experience, and he’s also incredibly motivated by the amazing customer feedback. And, although Merv is now focused on his company’s operations, he still loves solving customer problems using ServiceNow. In fact, he says that nothing beats that “lightbulb” moment when customers realize what’s possible.

32 Certifications and counting: The power of lifelong learning

with ServiceNow University

ServiceNow education has played a huge role in Merv’s amazing career journey. After initially becoming a CSA, he’s gone on to get an incredible 32 ServiceNow certifications, including becoming a Certified Implementation Specialist (CIS) and Certified Application Developer (CAD). Merv says that these certifications have given him the knowledge and skills he’s needed to grow his ServiceNow business

Returning to where it started—this time as a ServiceNow trainer

Merv is also a certified ServiceNow trainer, and he’s using those training skills to get back to his community. For example, he delivered the first university ServiceNow course in his region at Western State University. He describes this as a full circle moment, having started out working his way through WSU as a single parent and then having the privilege of returning as a lecturer and empowering the next generation. He says it’s part of his passion for giving back—the same passion that drove him to found Agiro.
